A mineral sunscreen protects with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which sit on the skin and reflect and absorb ultraviolet light. Chemical sunscreens use organic filters that absorb UV instead. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the two filters the US Food and Drug Administration proposed to recognise as safe and effective, and mineral formulas are a common choice for sensitive and reactive skin.
The familiar complaint about mineral sunscreen is the white film it leaves behind. Protectif is a 100% mineral SPF 50+ designed to blend without that chalky cast, and it comes in Untinted, Fair Tint and Deep Tint. Alongside its UV filters it carries peptides, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants including Hidrox, green tea and coffee seed. It was formulated by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dusan Sajic.
Apply it as the last step of your morning routine. About a third of a teaspoon covers the face. Reapply every two hours in direct sun and after sweating or swimming. If you have melasma or a deeper skin tone, a tinted shade gives extra protection against visible light: see sunscreen for melasma and sunscreen for dark skin.
