Why deeper skin still needs daily sunscreen

Melanin offers some natural protection from burning, but it does not prevent sun damage, and it does not protect against pigmentation. Dark spots, melasma and post-inflammatory marks tend to be more common and more persistent in deeper skin tones. Research also shows that visible light and long-wave UVA produce darker and longer-lasting pigmentation in skin types IV to VI than in lighter skin (Mahmoud et al., 2010).

The white-cast problem

Many mineral sunscreens leave a grey or chalky film on deeper skin, which is the main reason people stop wearing them. Protectif Deep Tint is a 100% mineral SPF 50+ designed to blend without a white cast or residual film. Its iron oxide tint also absorbs visible light, which matters for anyone prone to pigmentation.

What to look for

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 that you are happy to wear every day. For deeper skin, a tinted mineral formula usually gives the most natural finish. Apply about a third of a teaspoon to the face each morning and reapply every two hours in the sun. If dark spots are your main concern, our guide to fading dark spots covers the full routine.
