Mineral sunscreens protect with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which sit on the surface of the skin. They are a common recommendation for sensitive and reactive skin, including rosacea, because they are less likely to sting than some chemical filters. Both are filters the US Food and Drug Administration proposed to recognise as safe and effective.
Protectif is a 100% mineral SPF 50+ formulated for sensitive skin, including skin that is rosacea-prone or recovering after laser treatment. It is low in allergenicity and non-comedogenic, and it adds hyaluronic acid and glycerin for hydration. It was formulated by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dusan Sajic.
Even with a gentle formula, test a new sunscreen on a small patch of skin along the jaw for a few days before using it on your whole face. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine and reapply every two hours in the sun. If your skin is reactive because of chronic inflammation, our guide to inflammaging explains what else helps.
