The colour in a tinted mineral sunscreen comes from iron oxides, and they do more than even out your tone. Iron oxides absorb visible light, the wavelengths that pass straight through a clear sunscreen and can deepen pigmentation. A sunscreen that protected against both UV and visible light reduced melasma relapses compared with UV protection alone (Boukari et al., 2015). The tint also offsets the white cast that untinted mineral formulas can leave.
Protectif comes in two tints. Fair Tint suits lighter complexions and Deep Tint suits deeper ones, and the formula is designed to adapt to your skin tone as you blend it in. Both are 100% mineral SPF 50+ with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection, and peptides and hyaluronic acid for comfort.
A tinted mineral sunscreen is the better choice if you have melasma, dark spots or post-inflammatory marks, or a deeper skin tone where visible light plays a larger role in pigmentation. Our guide to getting rid of dark spots explains where sunscreen fits in a pigment routine.
