Zinc oxide protects across both UVB, the rays that cause burning, and UVA, the longer rays that drive skin aging and pigmentation. That breadth is why it sits at the centre of most broad-spectrum mineral formulas. It is also one of only two sunscreen filters the US Food and Drug Administration proposed to recognise as safe and effective, the other being titanium dioxide.
Protectif pairs zinc oxide with titanium dioxide for SPF 50+ broad-spectrum protection, using 100% mineral filters and no chemical ones. Zinc oxide sunscreens have a reputation for looking chalky, so Protectif is designed to blend in without the white cast, and the Fair and Deep tints add iron oxides for a more natural finish.
Look for broad-spectrum protection and at least SPF 30, and pick a formula you will actually wear every day, because consistency matters more than any single number. If you are treating dark spots or melasma, choose a tinted version: iron oxides block visible light that clear sunscreens let through (Boukari et al., 2015). See our tinted mineral sunscreens.
